Sisonke Employee Empowerment Scheme

The Sisonke Employee Empowerment Scheme owns 5% of Thungela's South Africa Coal Operations (SACO) Proprietary Limited and is entitled to receive 5% of the dividends paid out. Benefits after taxes and other expenses are shared equally among eligible employees.

The Sisonke Employee Empowerment Scheme was introduced in 2021 to provide bargaining unit employees with additional value while fostering a culture of shared success. The scheme is administered by a board of trustees made up of an equal split of employee and employer representatives and currently comprises 3,400 members.

The trust owns 5% equity in South Africa Coal Operations Proprietary Limited and received R102 million related to our 2024 performance. Sisonke hosted its second annual general meeting in September 2024. The gathering, which ensures transparency and accountability from the board and gives beneficiaries an update of the trust’s activities, attracted more than 100 people, including beneficiaries, the board of trustees and union representatives.
