Background
Thungela, as part of its Enterprise and Supplier Development programme introduced an intervention aimed at supporting Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from host communities in the Green Economy Sector.
Scope
Proposed green initiatives to be considered should align with one or more of the following global green economies focus areas:
a) Sustainable energy: Renewable energy solutions, energy efficiency, and clean technology innovations.
b) Circular economy: Waste reduction, recycling, upcycling, and resource efficiency strategies.
c) Low-carbon transportation: Sustainable mobility solutions such as electric vehicles, public transport improvements, and alternative fuels.
d) Green infrastructure and urban development: Eco-friendly building materials, smart urban planning, and water conservation solutions.
e) Sustainable agriculture and land use: Regenerative farming practices, agroecology, and conservation-driven land management.
The opportunity
Thungela hereby invite your company to submit a proposal to be considered for this opportunity.
Criteria
Interested SMMEs must:
a) Operate within Thungela’s host communities (Emalahlani, Govan Mbeki or Steve Tshwete Municipality).
b) Be majority black owned (51% plus)
c) Be compliant with SARS.
d) Demonstrate a practical and market-ready green economy business or initiative, which solves a particular issue within the communities.
e) Align with sustainable development goals and environmental best practices.

a) A company profile, including relevant experience and expertise.
b) Where the SMME does not have a relevant company profile, they may reach out to a ‘bigger’ partner who can support them with the green economy work and enable them. In this case, a co-submission together with the ‘bigger’ supporting company will be welcomed.
c) A detailed description of the proposed initiative.
d) A business model outlining market feasibility and sustainability.
e) Any supporting documents demonstrating past successes or proof of concept.
