Thungela, meaning ‘to ignite’ in isiZulu, is a global pure-play producer and exporter of high-quality, cost competitive thermal coal, with operations in South Africa and Australia. We focus on high-quality coal reserves and marketable production, positioning ourselves as a key player in the global energy market by delivering coal through world-class ports, powering nations.
What we do
Thungela operates six mining operations in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, including both underground and opencast mines – Zibulo, Goedehoop, Greenside, Isibonelo, Khwezela collieries and Mafube Coal as well as Ensham in Queensland, Australia. Thungela Marketing International, established in Dubai, enhances our ability to directly engage with the seaborne markets and position us closer to our customers.
We also have a 50% stake in the Phola Coal Processing Plant and a 23% interest in the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, one of the world’s leading coal export terminals. Through these investments and our commitment to sustainable mining practices we aim to create long-term value for employees, shareholders and the communities in which we operate.
