At Thungela we strive for excellence and accountability in everything we do. We are intentional about disclosing our performance against Regulation 34 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (GN R982 of 2014) as amended; under the National Environmental Management Act ( Act 107 of 1998).
In line with Thungela’s Environmental, Social and Governance Framework priorities, we conduct our business ethically and are committed to strong governance and transparent and consistent reporting.
We are committed to environmental stewardship; therefore, our environmental management system is premised on our values, zero harm mindset, no repeats and simple, non-negotiable standards. This is critical to maintaining our legal and social license to operate and ensuring a positive legacy.
To this end, we acknowledge our auditing obligations under regulation 34 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations 2014 as amended requiring us to make its environmental authorisation and environmental management programme audit reports available on our website. Compliance with these regulations requires that the holder of an environmental authorisation (EA) must, for the period during which the environmental authorisation, EMPr, and the closure plan in the case of a closure activity, remain valid;
- Ensure that the compliance with the conditions of the environmental authorization, the EMPr, and the closure plan in the case of a closure activity, is audited.
- Submit an environmental audit report to the relevant competent authority.
- Within 7 days of the date of submission of an environmental audit report to the competent authority, the holder of an environmental authorisation must notify all potential and registered interested and affected parties of the submission of that report, and make such report immediately available
a. to anyone on request; and
b. on a publicly accessible website, where the holder has such a website.
